Here's Cole, my son, holding a smaller painting from "The Garden Series." I painted this scene from the Bible nearly ten times.

"The Garden Series"
A tribute to Carl Bloch (1834-1890). Although the Bible doesn't mention a visitor, it's nice to imagine an angel comforting the Lord during his greatest time of need. That's why Jesus scolded his disciples. He wanted their company, their fellowship. He wanted his friends to help him through the most difficult time in his life. Instead, what He found was a group of men sleeping.

"The Consolation of Mary"
Mark 15:47 This painting show Mary Magdalene comforting the mother of Jesus. I entered this painting in an art contest a few years ago. Since it was my first show, I didn't know what to expect. To my surprise, I earned an "honorable mention" with a cash prize of $50.00. I remember thinking to myself, "This is easy. My first show and I'm a winner." I haven't won a single award since. God has a powerful way of knocking you down when you get a little too cocky.
"The Nailing of Jesus to the Cross"
Mark 15:24
Sept 2009
Why did Jesus have to die on the cross?
This question--perhaps the most important in Christianity--was one I could never fully answer until recently.
1. The Lord required an animal sacrifice for people to be forgiven of their sins. Since God doesn't accept sin, this was the only way for people to be right with God.
2. God said, "The life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves." Leviticus 17:11
3. One day, God said enough with animal sacrifices. Instead of the blood of goats or lambs, His son (the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world) would now be offered as the final sacrifice. All sins, yours and mine, now and forever, would be washed away (forgiven) by Jesus.
4. Jesus had to die to demonstrate his victory over death. Without the power of resurrection, Christianity would be dead.
5. Through death comes life. Seeds die in the ground before they spring growth. Salmons die after the lay their eggs. Pruning a live branch produces more twigs. Jesus' death gives us a new life.
"The Nailing of Jesus to the Cross" (inverted colors)
Here's the same painting as above but with changes to the positive and negative tones.
"The Crucifixion"
I did this painting for a friend who did some work on my house.
"The Crucifixion"
Here's the larger version. To save money, I used drywall and screwed it directly to the wall. Then I framed it. I used this same technique when hanging the large painting [The Garden Series] in my office.
"The Crucifixion" (detail)
Most scholars believe that the spike was actually driven through Christ's wrist. Unlike the hand, the wrist would be able to support more weight.

"The Thief"
Luke 23:42
It's hard to understand how a man can lead a life of wickedness and yet, at the final hour, gain the keys to heaven. It all comes down to the pureness of one's heart. Whether young or old--or hanging from a cross--a person's heart is what matters the most.

"The Denial of Peter"
Luke 22:60
"The Denial of Peter" (detail)
Three of Peter's accusers warming up to a fire.
"The Death of St. Peter"
Another Caravaggio, this painting shows the inverted crucifixion of Peter. Caravaggio was certainly an interesting man. Although I'm not exactly sure what adjectives to use, any of the following words could do: eccentric, crazy, hot-headed, villain, outlaw, run-away, malcontent... Whatever you call him, he was an incredible artist touched by God to inspire millions.
"Thomas"
John 20:25
This painting, a tribute to one of my favorite artist Caravaggio, shows what Thomas needed to do to be convinced that Jesus rose from the dead.
"Joseph"
Matthew 1:19-20
This painting tries to capture the moment when Joseph contemplates his relationship with Mary. Later, the Lord informs Joseph of His plan.

"St Paul's Conversion"
The Italian painter Caravaggio did the original of St. Paul's life changing experience. God has a way of grabbing one's attention. Sometimes a gentle whisper, sometimes a sledge-hammer blow.
"David and the Head of Goliath"
Some said the gaint was too big to defeat. For David, he was too big to miss.
"Mary Magdalene"
John 8:6
"The Healer"
In this painting, Jesus heals the severed ear of a Roman soldier. This was Christ's last healing before the cross.
"The Redeemer"
John 8:6
The Bible doesn't say what Jesus was writing in the dirt. Did he write the sins of Mary's accusers? Was he quoting scripture? Was it some sort of custom? This painting was done on drywall and hangs in my living room.
"Passover Feast"
This painting-- a gift for a friend-- depicts the last supper. Many think that the scene shows the last time the disciples ate togther. Not so. What it does show is Jesus and his friends enjoying a nice meal before the fasting required by Passover.
"Delphes Syphide"
Psalm 34:22
This is my favorite scene from Michelangelo's ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The frame is painted pine with trim.
"Hope"
"To him who knocks, the door shall be opened."
Matthew 7:8
"Soldier of Christ"
Ephesians 6:12-17
This print, inspirited by the movie "Kingdom of Heaven," hangs in my office. It's enclosed by a trimmed frame.
"Israeli Soldier"
"I will bless those who bless you." Genesis 12:3
As a Christian, my support of Israel is firm. Here a soldier stands at the Wailing Wall. Notice the slips of paper placed in the cracks above the soldier's right shoulder. These are prayers to God by visitor to the Wall.
"New Song"
"Sing to the Lord a new song." Psalm 98:1
This "hangs" above my front door. It's a reminder to me not to become complacent, but to resist the flesh and give God the glory with a "new song." I painted this on the wall and then added the frame.
